Wir planen deine ganze Australien-Reise.

Kurz gesagt: Wanderlust Travel & Adventure plans East Coast Australia trips for free at /plan-my-trip. You answer a few questions in about two minutes (route, dates, who’s going, bus or campervan, must-dos, budget) and we usually reply within a few hours with a custom day-by-day itinerary and one all-in price in Australian dollars. It covers transport, every bed and the big tours (K’gari, a Whitsundays sail, the Great Barrier Reef). There are no planning or booking fees, you book it all in one checkout, and you don’t pay for anything we can’t confirm.

The rest of this guide explains how free trip planning works (including who pays for it), what a good plan should include, and how to choose between a bus pass and a campervan.

Who plans East Coast trips for free?

There are four ways to get an East Coast plan, and only one of them gets you a bookable trip at a real price:

Way to planWhat it costsWas du bekommstCan you book it?
Do it yourself (guides, forums)Free, plus a lot of hoursWhatever you put togetherYes, product by product on 10 to 20 different sites
AI itinerary appsFree or a small subscriptionA day-by-day list of placesNo, prices are estimates and nothing is held
Backpacker travel agencies (like us)KostenlosA custom plan with live prices, booked for youYes, in one checkout
Fixed group toursFree to enquireOne set itinerary and groupYes, but you can’t change the route or pace

Free planning from a travel agency is free because the operators (the boat, the 4WD tour, the campervan company) pay the agency a commission when you book. That’s the normal model in travel. It also means you should check one thing: is the price you’re quoted the same as, or lower than, the operator’s own price? On our K’gari tour prices und Great Barrier Reef tour prices pages we show the operator’s own price next to ours, so you can see it for yourself.

What a good East Coast plan includes

A plan you can actually travel on has five parts. If one is missing, you’ll be filling the gap yourself on the road.

  1. The route and nights per stop. Sydney to Cairns is roughly 2,600 km by the direct road and closer to 3,000 km with the usual stops. Three to four weeks is the sweet spot; our Guide Sydney bis Cairns, has the nights per stop.
  2. Transport between stops. A hop-on hop-off Buspass oder ein Campervan, priced for your dates.
  3. Every bed. Dorms, female-only dorms or private rooms, booked before you arrive, not “find a hostel when you get there”.
  4. The big-ticket days. These sell out first: K’gari (Fraser Island) 4WD tours, Whitsundays sailing trips, the reef. A good plan puts them on dates that work with the bus or the drive.
  5. One total. One all-in price in AUD, so you know the whole trip cost before you pay anything.

Our plans come with all five, and we quote the trip as one package price.

Bus pass or campervan?

Both work, and the planner asks you which one you want. In short:

  • Buspass suits solo travellers and anyone who wants hostels and people around. It’s the cheapest way to move along the coast on your own, and you don’t drive. See campervan vs bus pass on the East Coast for the full cost comparison.
  • Campervan suits two or more people, people who want to stop wherever they like, and anyone who’d rather sleep near the beach than in a dorm. For one person a van is the most expensive way to do the coast; shared between two or more it gets much closer, because the van is also your bed. Add fuel and campsites to the hire price when you compare.

If you pick a campervan, we compare vans for your dates across the rental companies we book, then add the tours worth doing along the way. You can’t drive a rental van onto K’gari, so the K’gari day is a 4WD tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay; Whitsundays sailing trips leave from Airlie Beach and the reef trips from Cairns or Port Douglas, so the van waits at your campsite or a car park. One-way hire is normal on this coast: our Sydney to Cairns campervan prices show what one-way costs by brand and season.

How our free trip planner works

  1. Erzähl uns von deiner Reise unter /plan-my-trip: start and finish, stops, dates, group, age range, bus or campervan, how you want to sleep, must-dos and budget. It takes about two minutes.
  2. Get your plan. We usually reply within a few hours with a custom itinerary and one all-in price, by email. A real person sends it, and you can talk it through on WhatsApp or a call.
  3. Change anything until it’s right. Changes before you book are free.
  4. Book it in one checkout. Trips we can’t confirm instantly are confirmed with the operator within 24 hours at most. If we can’t confirm a date, you don’t pay for it.
  5. Travel with backup. We’re on WhatsApp for the whole trip.

We plan for any age, including people in their 30s and 40s (custom trips for your 30s), couples, groups of friends and families. Solo female trips are our speciality: see solo female travel in Australia. We also plan Fidschi und Sri Lanka.

Questions to ask any trip planner before you book

  • Is planning free, and is there a booking fee on top of the tour prices?
  • Is your price the same as or lower than the operator’s own website?
  • What happens if a tour or boat can’t confirm my date? Do I still pay for it?
  • Are beds booked for every night, or do I book my own hostels?
  • Who do I call if something goes wrong on the road?
  • Can I change the plan after I’ve booked, and does that cost anything from you (on top of the operator’s own terms)?

FAQs

Is there a free East Coast Australia trip planner? Yes. Our planner at /plan-my-trip is free, and it gives you a custom itinerary with one all-in price that you can book in one go. There are no planning or booking fees.

Can someone plan my Sydney to Cairns trip for me? Yes. Tell us your dates and must-dos and we plan the whole Sydney to Cairns trip: transport, beds and tours, as one price. Melbourne to Cairns works too.

Can you plan a campervan road trip down the East Coast? Yes. Choose Campervan as your transport in the planner. We compare vans for your dates across the companies we book and add the tours along the route, such as K’gari, a Whitsundays sail and the reef.

How long does it take to get a plan? We usually reply within a few hours. During the night in Australia it can be the next morning.

Do I have to book once I get the plan? No. The plan is free and there’s no obligation. You only pay if you decide to book.

Is an AI itinerary as good as a planned trip? An AI itinerary is a good starting list of places, but its prices are guesses and nothing is booked. A planned trip from an agency uses real products at live prices, so the total is what you actually pay, and someone books it and helps if plans change.
