South Africa Tour: Kruger Safari to Cape Town

South Africa is the adventure all-rounder: Big Five game drives in Kruger, a day in a Swazi village across the border in Eswatini, then Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula and the penguins of Boulders Beach. Few countries put wild bush and a world-class city in the same fortnight, and fewer do it with a direct flight from Australia.

The route: Johannesburg to Cape Town in 12 days

Day 1 you land in Johannesburg, meet your group and leader and settle in. Day 2 is Soweto by foot and bus, the Apartheid Museum and Mandela's house. Day 3 drives the Panorama Route to Graskop, day 4 reaches Kruger National Park for your first taste of the bush, and day 5 is a full safari day in open vehicles, including a sunset drive looking for the Big Five. Day 6 crosses into Eswatini and Hlane National Park, and day 7 is spent in a Swazi village learning the local way of life. Day 8 travels down through beach towns towards the Cape. Day 9 is Table Mountain for the view over Cape Town, day 10 is a walking tour of the historic city centre, day 11 is the Cape Peninsula with a boat cruise to a seal colony and the Boulders Beach penguins, and day 12 you check out and continue your journey.

Where you sleep and what is included

Eleven nights are covered in twin or double rooms: a safari camp at the edge of the Kruger bush with a pool to cool off between game drives, ensuite huts inside Hlane National Park in Eswatini with wildlife on the doorstep, a beachside lodge with a pool on the run down the coast, and a Cape Town city hotel within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront. The price includes 15 meals, a group leader from airport pickup, all transport in South Africa and Eswatini and every listed activity, with no pay-on-arrival extras. Groups are around 30 travellers. Pack neutral colours and a warm jacket for open-vehicle game drives, walking shoes for the city days and binoculars for Kruger. Flights, travel insurance (required by the operator), visas and personal spending are extra.

Best time to go on safari and see Cape Town

The two halves of this trip have opposite seasons, so there is no perfect month, only trade-offs. Kruger is best for game viewing in the dry winter, roughly May to October, when the bush thins out and animals gather at waterholes. Cape Town is at its best in summer, November to March, when the beaches and Table Mountain are in full sun, though the wind can blow hard. The shoulder months of April to May and September to October give you a fair deal on both: good game viewing with Cape weather that is still warm. Expect cold early mornings on winter game drives and pack a beanie for the open vehicle.

Flights from Australia and extending the trip

South Africa is one of the easier long-haul destinations from Australia, with direct flights from Sydney and Perth into Johannesburg and plenty of one-stop options via the Middle East or Asia. The trip starts in Johannesburg and finishes in Cape Town, so book an open-jaw ticket or a cheap domestic hop back. Cape Town rewards a few extra days: the winelands at Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are an hour away, the Garden Route runs east along the coast, and surf, hikes and markets fill any gaps. Check current entry requirements for your passport before you book, including the separate rules for Eswatini, which you cross into on day 6.

Money, safety and budget beyond the tour

South Africa uses the rand and cards are accepted almost everywhere, with ATMs easy to find in cities and at major stops. Eswatini uses the lilangeni, which is pegged to the rand, and rand is accepted there. With 15 meals, all activities and transport paid, your extra spending is the remaining meals, drinks, souvenirs and tips. Tipping guides, rangers and restaurant staff is customary. On safety: travel in a group with a leader removes most of the risk, but follow their advice in Johannesburg and Cape Town, do not walk alone after dark, keep phones out of sight on the street and use registered taxis or rideshares. Budget for travel insurance, which the operator requires.

Gute Fragen, klare Antworten

What does the South Africa Adventure include?

Eleven nights of accommodation including a Kruger safari camp, ensuite huts in Hlane National Park, a beachside lodge and a Cape Town hotel, 15 meals, a group leader from airport pickup, all transport and every listed activity: Soweto, the Apartheid Museum, the Panorama Route, Kruger open-vehicle game drives with a sunset drive, the Eswatini village experience, the Cape Town walking tour, Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula day, a seal colony cruise and Boulders Beach penguins.

How much is a South Africa tour?

The 12-day South Africa Adventure is from 2.269 € per person. Flights, travel insurance, visas and personal spending are extra.

Will I see the Big Five?

The trip includes open-vehicle game drives in Kruger National Park, one of the best places in Africa for lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, plus a sunset drive. Wildlife is never guaranteed, but Kruger gives you a strong chance across a full safari day.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

May to October is dry season and the best game viewing in Kruger. Cape Town is sunniest from November to March. April to May and September to October balance both halves of the trip well.

Is South Africa safe for backpackers?

On a group trip with a leader, yes, as long as you follow local advice: avoid walking alone at night in the cities, keep valuables out of sight and use registered transport. The itinerary sticks to well-run lodges, parks and guided city tours.

Do I need a visa for South Africa and Eswatini?

The trip crosses into Eswatini on day 6, so check current entry requirements for your passport for both countries on Smartraveller or with the relevant embassies before you book flights.

Is this a good trip for solo travellers?

Yes. Rooms are twin or double share, the group is around 30, and the shared game drives, village day and city tours mean you travel with the same crew for 12 days.
