Two easy-paced route ideas

Where to go in a motorhome

South Island · 10 to 14 days · one way

Christchurch to Queenstown, by the lakes

  1. Christchurch: pick up the motorhome and stock up.
  2. Lake Tekapo: the turquoise lake and some of the darkest night skies in the world.
  3. Aoraki/Mount Cook: the flat Hooker Valley walk to a glacier lake, or a ski-plane landing on the snow.
  4. Wānaka: lakeside walks and a slower pace (about 2.5 hours from Mount Cook).
  5. Queenstown: the Earnslaw steamship, then a day to Milford Sound by coach or plane while the motorhome stays parked.

Sample: Maui Ultima, 14 nights, 9–23 Mar 2027, 3.339 € on Wanderlust Travel.

North Island · 7 to 10 days · Auckland return

Auckland, Hobbiton, Rotorua and Waitomo

  1. Auckland: pick up the motorhome. Returning here means no one-way fee.
  2. Matamata: the Hobbiton movie set. Tours leave from The Shire's Rest, just outside town.
  3. Rotorua: geysers, hot pools and a Māori cultural evening.
  4. Waitomo: a quiet boat ride through the glowworm caves (about 2 hours from Rotorua).
  5. Back to Auckland, or carry on south to Taupō and Tongariro.

Sample: Maui Ultima, 10 nights, 9–19 Mar 2027, 2.359 € on Wanderlust Travel.

New Zealand motorhome hire: your questions

How much does it cost to hire a motorhome in New Zealand?

For two people, a motorhome with a toilet and shower was 2,36 € for 10 nights from Auckland and 3,34 € for 14 nights Christchurch to Queenstown in March 2027, on Wanderlust Travel (checked 2 November 2026). It depends mostly on the season: on the rental companies' own websites the cheapest toilet-and-shower motorhome for two weeks from Christchurch was 0,89 € in June, 1,57 € in April and 2,62 € in January. Fuel, campsites and the Cook Strait ferry are extra.

What's the difference between a motorhome and a campervan?

A motorhome has its own toilet and shower, room to stand up and move around, and usually a proper kitchen inside. A campervan is smaller and cheaper, and most have no shower. If you'd like your own bathroom every night, choose a motorhome.

Which motorhome suits a couple?

A 2-berth like the Maui Ultima or the Star RV Polaris 2 is the easiest to drive and park, with everything two people need. If you'd like more room to spread out, a 4-berth such as the Apollo Euro Camper cost only a little more on our sample dates.

Do I need a special licence to drive a motorhome in New Zealand?

No. The motorhomes we book are automatic and drive on a normal full car licence. Drivers need to be 21 or over. There's no maximum driver age with Apollo, Britz, Maui or Mighty; JUCY and Star RV need drivers under 75. If your licence isn't in English, bring an approved translation or an International Driving Permit with it.

Can we freedom camp in a motorhome?

Yes, in the places that allow it. Only certified self-contained vehicles with a fixed toilet can freedom camp on council land, and you'll find free freedom camping spots along the way. Holiday parks with power, showers and laundries are the comfortable alternative, and Department of Conservation campsites are cheaper and very scenic.

Can you add Hobbiton, Milford Sound or a scenic flight?

Yes. We sell them with live prices, from 49 € per person on Wanderlust Travel: Hobbiton and the Waitomo glowworm caves in the North Island, and Milford Sound, glacier flights and the TSS Earnslaw in the South Island. Tell us when you send your motorhome request and we'll put them in the same booking.

How do I book, and can I talk to someone first?

Put your dates into the search at the top of this page: it prices every motorhome we can book, live, and you can book online. Your card is only charged once the rental company confirms, usually within 24 hours. If you'd rather talk it through, ask for a call and we'll ring you at a time that suits.
