Kurz gesagt: K’gari and Fraser Island are the same place. The Queensland Government made K’gari the official name in June 2023, and it means “paradise” in the language of the Butchulla, the island’s Traditional Owners. You do not need a tour to visit, but you do need a 4WD to drive on the island and a vehicle access permit for it, so most backpackers join a guided day trip or a 2 to 3 day tag-along instead. A day trip covers the highlights; two or three days is the version people remember.
Facts below were checked against Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), the Queensland Government, SeaLink and the Kingfisher Bay Resort on 27 October 2026. Fees and timetables change, so confirm them on the official pages before you go.
Questions: the basics
Is K’gari the same as Fraser Island?
Yes. K’gari is the island’s traditional name and Fraser Island is the colonial one. Both names are still used, and you will see them together as “K’gari (Fraser Island)” on official pages and in this guide because most people still search for Fraser Island.
When was Fraser Island renamed K’gari, and what does K’gari mean?
The island was officially renamed K’gari on 7 June 2023. It is pronounced “Gurrie” and means “paradise” in Butchulla, the language of the Butchulla people, who are the Traditional Owners. In Butchulla creation stories K’gari is also the name of the white spirit who helped shape their country. The earlier name came from Captain James Fraser, a ship’s master who was wrecked on the island in 1836.
Where is K’gari, and how far is it from Brisbane, Noosa and Hervey Bay?
K’gari is off the Queensland coast between Rainbow Beach to the south and Hervey Bay to the north, and it is the world’s largest sand island. From Brisbane, Rainbow Beach is roughly a 3 hour drive and Hervey Bay is roughly 3.5 hours. From Noosa, Rainbow Beach is about two hours. Hervey Bay is the northern gateway and Rainbow Beach is the southern one. Rainbow Beach vs Hervey Bay explains which to choose.
Fragen: Anreise
How do you get to K’gari (Fraser Island)?
You cross by water. QPWS lists two vehicle barge routes: Inskip Point (near Rainbow Beach) to Hook Point on the southern end of the island, and River Heads (near Hervey Bay) to Kingfisher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek. There is also a passenger ferry from River Heads to Kingfisher Bay Resort. Tours handle the crossing for you and include the ferry in the price.
How long is the crossing, and what does the barge or ferry cost?
The Inskip Point barge takes about 10 minutes, runs generally from 6am to 5.30pm and needs no booking. The River Heads crossings take 30 to 50 minutes and must be booked. For walk-on passengers, SeaLink’s River Heads to Kingfisher Bay ferry is 59 € return for an adult and 39 € one way (checked Oct 2026). Vehicle barge prices depend on the vehicle and route: our 4WD hire vs tour breakdown works through a real example.
Can you visit K’gari without a tour?
Yes, in three ways: take a 4WD across on a barge and drive yourself, stay at a resort on the island such as Kingfisher Bay and use its transfers, or walk the island’s Great Walk. Independent visitors still need to plan the tides, permits, fuel and food, which is why a tour is the easier option for a short trip. Can you take your own car to K’gari covers the rules.
Can you visit K’gari without a car?
Yes. You can go as a passenger on a guided tour, where the guide drives, or you can ride along on a tag-along, where drivers share the wheel and passengers are welcome. You can also take the passenger ferry from River Heads and stay at a resort. What you cannot do is drive a normal car or rental sedan on the island.
Do you need a 4WD on K’gari?
Yes, if you are driving. QPWS says only 4WD vehicles are allowed on K’gari, and recommends high-clearance 4WDs because the tracks and beaches are soft sand. There are no sealed roads, and 75 Mile Beach doubles as the main highway. If you do not want to drive, a guided tour provides the 4WD and the driver.
Do you need a permit for K’gari?
Yes, every vehicle needs a vehicle access permit, bought in advance in the driver’s name. For K’gari alone it is 39 € for up to a month, and 199 € for up to a year. A combined K’gari and Cooloola permit is 69 € for a month (QPWS fees, checked Oct 2026). Camping also needs its own permit, currently 4,89 € per person per night (checked Oct 2026). Guided tours and tag-alongs include the permits in the price.
Questions: planning your trip
Can you do K’gari in a day? Is a day trip worth it?
Yes, and for many people a day trip is worth it. The K’gari-Tagestour ab Rainbow Beach oder Noosa, ab 179 €, covers 75 Mile Beach, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck in about eight hours with a guide driving. What a day cannot give you is time: you spend a lot of it in a vehicle and leave before the beach goes quiet. If that bothers you, add a night.
How many days do you need on K’gari?
Two or three days is the sweet spot. One day covers the icons at a fast pace. Two days gives you a night at a beach camp and a relaxed second morning. A third day adds more swimming time and extra stops such as Lake Wabby on some tours. See 2-day vs 3-day K’gari tours for what the extra day buys.
What is the best time to visit K’gari?
Late winter to spring, roughly August to October, is the best of the year: dry, sunny and warm enough to swim in the lakes, with humpback whales in Hervey Bay until around October. Summer is hot, humid and busy, and winter nights in a tent are cold. Tours run all year. The beste Reisezeit für K’gari has the month-by-month version.
Can you camp on K’gari?
Yes, but only in designated camping areas with a QPWS camping permit. QPWS runs a long list of camping areas, including fenced ones, and camping permits are booked online. Tag-along tours camp at their own enclosed beach camps and include the permit. Keep all food locked in a vehicle and never in a tent, because of the dingoes.
Is there phone reception on K’gari?
Only patchy reception. QPWS says mobile coverage on K’gari is very intermittent, and it lists public phones at Eurong, Happy Valley and Kingfisher Bay Resort. Treat the island as a place to be offline, tell someone your plans, and download maps before you cross.
Fragen: Schwimmen und Sicherheit
Can you swim at K’gari?
Yes in the freshwater lakes and creeks, no in the ocean. QPWS says there are no patrolled swimming areas on K’gari and tells visitors not to swim in the ocean because of rips and sharks. The lakes, Eli Creek and the Champagne Pools are where tours swim. At the lakes, keep food away from the shore because dingoes steal it.
Is K’gari dangerous? What about the dingoes?
It is safe if you follow the rules. The main risks are the ocean, soft-sand driving and dingoes. QPWS describes the island’s dingoes (wongari) as wild and unpredictable. Never feed them, stay within arm’s reach of children, walk in groups, do not run, and keep food locked away. Feeding or disturbing a dingo is an offence with heavy fines. Guides brief you on this and tour campsites are fenced.
What is the age limit or driving age on a K’gari tag-along?
It depends on the tour, and you do not have to drive. Two tag-alongs we sell set the driver minimum at 21 and the tour age band at 18 to 35, and 4WD hire companies want drivers over 25. Everyone else rides as a passenger. The rules for each tour are in K’gari tag-along licence and age rules.

Is K’gari worth it?
Yes, for most backpackers it is one of the best stops on the East Coast. It is a World Heritage sand island with rainforest, freshwater lakes, shipwrecks and beach driving, and a tag-along adds a campfire night and a crew of other travellers. It is a poor fit if you want a lot of beach swimming, because the ocean is off limits, or hate camping, in which case pick a beach-house tour. What a K’gari tag-along is like shows a typical day.
K’gari vs Moreton Island: which is better?
K’gari is bigger, more remote and has the freshwater lakes; Moreton Island is easier to reach from Brisbane. Both are sand islands with their own vehicle access permit rules. If you have a day from Brisbane, Moreton works, with options like the Moreton Island 4WD-Öko-Sightseeing-Tour, ab 129 €. If you have two or three days on the East Coast, K’gari is the bigger adventure.
K’gari vs the Whitsundays: which should you choose?
They are different trips, and many people do both. K’gari is a 4WD, camping and freshwater lakes adventure in southern Queensland. The Whitsundays are a sailing, snorkelling and white-sand trip much further north, based in Airlie Beach. If you can only pick one, choose K’gari for driving and campfires, and the Whitsundays for boats and reef.
